EdTech trends for schools to look out for in 2019

by | May 22, 2019 | iPads, News

The need to accelerate the role of technology and digital capabilities in education came to the fore in 2018, with the launch of the EdTech 50: a celebration of some of the shooting stars in the UK’s educational technology sector. It lists the 50 most influential people, products and projects in this sector, and was compiled by EdTech UK on behalf of The Education Foundation.

One year on, this article discusses how technology is being used in education and the ways in which it’s transforming classrooms!

Let’s have a read…

What are the key EdTech trends for schools in 2019?

With so many innovative, exciting technologies taking centre stage in schools up and down the country, these are some of the most significant EdTech trends:

1) Personalised and mobile learning:

Teaching and learning is moving away from a traditional one-size-fits-all approach, towards personalised learning. The use of iPads, for example, encourages a more active style of learning. Students can work at a pace that suits them and find their own ways to approach and respond to challenges, encouraging skills like problem-solving.

Educational techniques that adapt to individual students’ strengths and weaknesses are also growing in popularity. These include, for example, flipped learning and formative assessment. Learning analytics and other online tools are helping teachers understand and support under-performing students.

2) Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML):

With AI and ML being hot topics, schools need to think about the impact this will have on their students. They also need to ensure that students have the skills to succeed in the modern workplace.

AI and ML are predicted to influence how some Scientific, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects are taught, too.

3) Project-based learning:

With a huge UK-wide shortage of skilled workers for STEM fields, schools should be turning to practical, project-based learning that encourages students to solve realistic problems and come up with solutions.

Hands-on learning that fosters collaboration will give students the skills they need to pursue STEM careers. There is an epic variety of technologies available to support this, including iPads, interactive screens, 3D printers and laser cutters.

4) Gamification:

For many schools, doing away with textbooks is still a very distant concept. Despite this, the need to increase student engagement is an immediate concern. With this in mind, the use of video game design and elements of gamification in education looks set to continue.

Students respond well to exercises where they score points or ‘rewards’. Gamification can also give students more scope to self-discover and learn inside and outside of the classroom, even from a very young age.

5) Augmented reality, virtual reality and immersive reality:

With immersive technologies making strides in a range of industries, this will undoubtedly be echoed in education. Immersive teaching, whereby teachers can transport their students to different parts of the world, for example, is likely to become much more common.

The use of these technologies will help accelerate student understanding of complex topics. It will also allow them to explore rich new environments in ways that would have been previously unimaginable!

To sum up…

In 2019, it’s without doubt that EdTech trends for schools will only gain traction, with schools seeking to embrace technology to improve learning outcomes.

With an array of tools to support teachers and students, it’s little wonder that technology in education seems totally unstoppable!
