Avoid bacterial nasties with blade hand dryers for schools

by | Apr 17, 2019 | Hand Dryers, News

Hand dryers are a common sight in today’s school washrooms. Whilst being more eco-friendly and reliable than paper towels (which all too often run out), some hand dryers have come under fire for being less than squeaky-clean when it comes to hygiene.

In this article, we’ll examine blade hand dryers for schools – which are generally seen as the healthiest type – and discuss why they could be your ideal solution.

How do blade hand dryers for schools work?

Blade hand dryers for schools come in either hands-in or hands-under designs and use a strip of high-velocity airflow to literally ‘wipe’ the water from your hands. The design of the blades blows water and air droplets out to the side of the dryer. Hands should be positioned palm-side up, then palm-side down to dry them thoroughly.

How do they compare with alternatives?

1) Cost

Dyson’s Airblade – a leader in the field – is up to 80% cheaper to run than older-style hand dryers. It’s also estimated to be an average of 98% less expensive annually than using paper towels.

In addition, blade hand dryers for schools remove the requirement to restock and dispose of paper towels – which also has hygiene implications!

When looking at upgrading your hand dryers, you should also factor in maintenance. New school hand dryers need replacing less regularly than older models due to their brushless motors and vandal-resistant features.

At Utility Rentals, we offer flexible rental contracts allowing schools to spread the cost of new hand dryers. Our rental agreements include installation and a full parts and labour breakdown warranty to protect you against unexpected repair costs.

2) Hygiene

Older models of hand dryer were guilty of blowing out bacteria stored internally onto users’ hands, some of it from faecal matter.

The heat generated by ‘warm air’ dryers, for example, makes them a real magnet for germs. Impatient users are also more likely to walk away from older-style dryers with wet hands, due to their slow drying speed.

Today’s hand dryers are more efficient and more hygienic, with an awesome range of features to eradicate these problems. These include HEPA filters, which work by sucking bacteria from the air.

And, because blade hand dryers are touch-free, they won’t pick up bacteria from the previous user’s hands and transfer them to the next user (like older button-activated models).

The Dyson Airblade, for example, dries 95% of moisture from hands in an impressive 13 seconds and uses its HEPA filter to remove a whopping 99.9% of airborne bacteria.

It also benefits from internal self-cleaning; antibacterial plastics; a cold plasma generator (which kills bacteria caused by heated airflow); and a sterilisation field that practically eliminates the risks associated with E. coli, staph and MRSA.

3) Environmental impact

Last but by no means least, blade hand dryers for schools have great eco-credentials!

Rather than hordes of used paper towels gathering in bins or on the floor, your school washrooms can benefit from a less messy, more environmentally-friendly alternative.

The Dyson Airblade combines super-quick drying speeds with a 1.6kW power rating, ensuring energy consumption of 4.4–6W per use. This compares with a hefty 25+ for older-style warm-air hand dryers.

To sum up…

Blade hand dryers for schools can offer a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly alternative to paper towels – and models are becoming quieter and more energy-efficient by the day!
