It’s that time of year when teachers should start thinking about their demos for school open days.

You want something that wows the kids, and encourages parents that your school is the right option for their child. Getting the right balance can be tricky, but don’t worry – that’s where we come in.

This is your chance to show off a little, so we’ve put together some demos for school open days to set your imagination running. Build on these ideas, and you’re sure to have an open day to remember!

4 demos for school open days

1. Maths – number challenges on the electronic whiteboard

Demonstrate how fun learning at your school can be by playing games on the electronic whiteboard. You could even bring in some of your existing students to help the newbies (and test their knowledge). Here are just a few games you could play:

  • A countdown-style ‘get to the number’ game. You could even put the clock up on the big screen!
  • A number-pattern challenge; students should identify patterns and create the next game in the sequence.
  • Multiplication and division challenges – not too tough though, or they might be put off!

To find more fun games, use the software that comes with your whiteboard, learning apps or just a blank board that you personalise yourself.

2. Science – Van de Graff generator

Introduce your new students to electrostatic energy, using this exciting bit of kit.

Ask your students to put their hands on the large sphere and watch their hair stand on end, while explaining the science behind it. Remember to make sure they’re properly earthed and that they touch something wooden to safely discharge all that energy!

This is one of our favourite demos for school open days. It gets everyone interested in science and puts a smile on their faces!

3. Design and Technology – engrave keyrings for new students

With this demo, you get to show off some of your snazzy equipment – namely, a laser cutter – and prospective students receive a nice memento of their school visit. It’s a win-win!

You could even ask your existing students to make these souvenirs (with a little supervision of course)! Pre-cut keyring shapes and set up a program where you simply type the name of the new student into a space.

Any text you add should be fun and engaging, you could even include the school logo as a little reminder of the school they should choose!

4. Food Technology – bake lots of tasty treats

Wandering around the school asking questions can use up a lot of energy for both parents and students. They’re bound to get hungry and appreciate a snack, so why not bake some treats for them using your catering equipment?

You could make:

  • Cakes
  • Brownies
  • Flapjacks
  • Anything bitesize that won’t take them too long to eat!

This is a great way to get parents on side and demonstrate how Food Tech classes work. Just be careful to consider any possible allergies people may have.

So, there you have it; four demos for school open days you can use to attract new students (and parents). Make a success of it, and you’ll gain some great new students next year!
