4 brain foods to help your students ace their exams
Exam season is almost upon us, so it’s time to make sure your students are eating healthy brain foods to help them get through these gruelling months.
Whether it’s the SATs, GCSEs, A-Levels or the 11+, we know you want to do everything to make sure your students are ready for those exams. Encouraging them to eat healthily (and snack on stuff that gives their brain a boost) may be the difference between a grade or two.
So what brain foods should your kids eat? Luckily, we have the answer:
4 brain foods to help students get that A!
Now, we’re not promising miracles here – if a student eats a piece of fruit, they’re not automatically going to get the top grade. However, eating right alongside a course of hard work, revision and having fun, will help your students achieve their targets.
Here are the foods they should be eating to kick-start their brain into learning mode:
1. Anything with omega-3
Oily fish is great as it’s pumped full with omega-3 – which helps regulate dopamine levels in the brain, making it easier for kids to understand and learn new things.
The top sources of omega-3 are salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers. However, if your kids aren’t into fish, you could try linseed or flaxseed oil. Pumpkin seeds and walnuts are also a great bet.
In fact, walnuts are a great snack for many reasons – they are chock-full of nutrients that keep your heart healthy, act as an anti-inflammatory and promote blood flow – so more oxygen gets to the brain. Result!
2. Berries, fruits and juices
As well as being very good for your overall health, berries and fruits also improve mental agility – perfect if your students are struggling with sums or trying to remember certain dates.
Try blueberries, strawberries, apples and bananas and see what happens. Or be more adventurous and find other fruits that are full of vitamin C – oranges, red peppers, grapefruits and guava are great choices. And if you can convince your students to eat some Brussels sprouts that’s even better!
All of these also have natural sugars that will keep the kids alert, on target and focused. It’s also much better for them than other sources like sweets, or a spoonful of sugar on their cereal.
3. Tomatoes, broccoli and spinach
These are your go-to super brain foods! Throw them all together in a salad – maybe with beets and avocado – and you’ll have a dish that’s bound to improve your student’s brain power – if you can persuade them to eat it …
Eggs are a great way to start the day. Because they can be cooked in so many ways, it’s very unlikely that your students will get bored of them.
Eggs have the energy and nutrients (protein, vitamin B12 and more) to get students through the day, and will fill them up more than cereals or pastries in the morning. Add in the the fact that cooked eggs are usually less than 100 calories – depending on style of cooking – and you might realise you should probably be having eggs for breakfast too!
