Most people combine the two and call them ‘interactive whiteboards’, but electronic whiteboards and interactive screens are actually two very different things. Do you know the difference?

Don’t worry, we do! Here we’ll explain their core features so that you can make an informed decision about which would be best for your classroom. Take a peek:

Let’s have a look at them both:

Electronic whiteboards and interactive screens are both fantastic tools for getting students up out of their seats and joining in with lessons. They promote a level of interactivity and collaboration that traditional whiteboards just can’t compete with.

They make it easier for teachers to create eye-catching and effective learning materials. This promotes a more active, visual, style of learning which is simply more fun than traditional methods.

Now, let’s explore what each of these devices can bring to your classroom:

Electronic whiteboards

These devices have been around for a while, and act like traditional whiteboards (but without the ink stains and the need to wipe them down after every lesson).

Using a projector, computer images are displayed on a board and can then be manipulated using an electronic pen.

This brings its own maintenance issues; projector bulbs and cleaning filters will need to be replaced, the screen will need regular calibration and the pen will need to be charged regularly. As it works with a projector, you’ll need to close the blinds to make sure students can see what’s being displayed.

However, it’s still an effective learning tool. Teachers generally find it easy to use, though some of the software is a little basic. You can get school-friendly SMART boards loaded with fast, simple, intuitive technology – this is best option if you’re looking for something to spice up your classroom.

Interactive screens

First came chalkboards, then wipe-down whiteboards and electronic whiteboards, now there’s large format interactive screens. And, guess what? This technology is still improving.

Think of an interactive screen as a huge iPad. It’s powered by touch, not a specific pen, so is even more geared towards interactivity and collaboration than the electronic whiteboard.

Teachers can run software and hardware from their own devices (iPads, desktops, laptops) via the screen. There’s a huge range of educational software and apps that can integrate with interactive screens, so whatever age group or subject you teach, there’s bound to be at least one to help you out.

While initially a tad more expensive than electronic whiteboards, these touch screens are cheaper to run. This is because they use less electricity, they don’t need as much maintenance, and tend to last longer.

There is a host of options for you to choose from with both electronic whiteboards and interactive screens. Whichever you choose, make sure you find the right fit for your classroom and teaching style. If you’re not sure what you need, get expert advice to help you make the right choice.

Both electronic whiteboards and interactive screens are a great addition to any classroom, so you should really consider updating your equipment today.
